Serial Port Testing

First GtkTerm needed to be downloaded from https://fedorahosted.org/gtkterm/, built, and then installed (including some dependencies):

sudo apt-get install libvte-dev intltool build-essential libgtk2.0-dev
gunzip gtkterm-0.99.7-rc1.tar.gz
tar -vxf gtkterm-0.99.7-rc1.tar
cd gtkterm-0.99.7-rc1/
./configure
make
sudo make install

Quick test using an old R.S. "DATALINKER" dongle in "loopback" mode:
